  1. who on earth finds pleasure in displacing nearly 500 human beings? have these people been served with eviction orders or a request to formalise their status of sorts? Eviction of 500 heads of family may boil down to about 5000 people considering our Ugandan homes.

    GODREY W.

  2. My friends,

I would not evict these people if the information Corporal Otto is providing is true. The Kabaka should see sense. He is only sowing the seeds for the abolition of the Kingdom if he carries on with punitive measures against even his own subjects. He is supposed to be protecting them, not evicting them. He is sowing hatred against the Kingdom. The people advising him should see sense.

    George O. Pacu-Otto

  3. Patrick Otto,

If the list you posted is authentic, then the Kabaka should indeed evaluate the advise he recieves, because eviction with a promise to protect subjects’ interests will not promote unity in the region and in the country as a whole. Surely, where will the 83% of those evicted Baganda go since Buganda is their ancesteral home? And the case for non-Baganda facing eviction is equally tricky. As we all know, there are many Baganda living in many parts of the country but if other people are evicted from their legally owned property(land/plots), then other tribes may punish their former Baganda friends in retaliation of what the Mengo establishment has done. This should be administered from the (international relations/diplomatic point of view. Buganda is an entity that interacts/deals with other cultural entities as such the interests of friends should be addressed.
And there is no doubt that the rich are responsible for massive displacement of poor peasants. Throughout the entire country are many stories of rich people buying a lot of land and then evicting former owners even without complete payments. These are rich crooks who sometimes get a support of some army officers to help carry out evictions and the army is generally blamed.
But as I said earlier, there is need to cross-check the authenticity of the list before we over-react. As you advised earlier, we should only discuss issues based on facts and if there no facts, one should keep quiet, I need to cross-check the rumours to establish their validity.

    Regards
    Simon.

  4. But what criteria was used to determine that those labeled Baganda/Kabaka’s people are actually Baganda? To me it appears that their names only (based on the data provided) were used to determine their ethnicity. This could be and I believe is not accurate. Therefore any conclusion drwawn from incrrect data must wrong. Beware of such data and their sources.

    Cliff Musimenta mwene Kinyagyiro

  5. George,

You should be very careful while condemning people. That list this guy cMutengesa is talking about is very old.Tha incident was there about a year and Half and saw it on telly.Buganda lands Board denied that. There are individuals who want to potray Mengo as anti people,Rember that was about the land act and it was a good campaign. So, do not take it like he want s you.We all know who the guys works for. There are business men who also do things in the name of Mengo, but let me tell you this.In uGANDA today,if you have land and it has squaters, you sell it to army guys and you get money. For them they evict and that is why many officers are involved because people sell to them beacuse they can use their guns to intimidate them.Therr so many people on Kabaka `s land who have never been evicted. My mother in village is sitted on the 350 mile land has never and dont think will ever be evicted. Most of the 350 miles are in kyaggwe, nansana ,wAKISO. There was alot of politics about the land act and so amany actors.Just ask yourself, why are they trying to show us the tribes of the evictees. To me it does not matter .But the wanted to envike the ganda that their Kabaka is evicting them.Their so many things these guys will do

  6. 500 Wakiso families face eviction
Publication date: Tuesday, 10th February, 2009
    By Chris Kiwawulo

OVER 500 families in Makindye-Sabagabo sub-county in Wakiso district risk being displaced by Mengo authorities.

The Buganda Land Board (BLB) recently erected a signpost directing residents of Kirinda, Buggu, Busabala and Ziranumbu to stop trespassing on Kabaka’s land.

Disturbed by the development, the residents removed the signpost and Mengo responded by ordering the arrest of a man identified as Fred Katongole. The locals threatened to demonstrate and harm any Buganda official seen in the area if Katongole was not released.

After securing Katongole’s release, they demanded to meet the BLB.

The BLB estates manager, John Kamoome, told a heated meeting at Busabala playground along the shores of Lake Victoria on Friday that the area was a reserve on the Kabaka’s 350-square miles of land.

“The Kabaka will never chase you away. But the fact is, this is gazetted land and if he wants to do any development here, he can choose to compensate or resettle you somewhere else,” Kamoome explained.

  7. let the evicted baganda come out and talkwe dont want wolokoso and besides those are just names you never know the people dont look the name

  8. JAMES.

Thanks for that. This gentleman reall is an apologist.I see no point in what he is trying to say here.He is peaking of the present mixing it with the past.Ever y culture or people have got a history or dark side of it.Even Britain, what Queen Elizabeth 1 did cannot be done today. Those monarcs had absolute power which is not the case today.Yes, land in the past was manged different and it is not the same today. So, to me it seems this guy is after somthing else ,may be to please some circles. What he wrote has nothing to do with the present land tenure system which is enshrined in the constitution. There are guys here who are bent to confuse other yet they knw the truth.

  9. KI LUTS
Don’t even compare the British monarch to Buganda . Do you know that the Queen’s expenditure is public? Do you know also that her funding has been frozen for the next years by her government, and have you heard her complaining? Is there any land which belongs to the queen which is not developed, do you hear her get involved in politics?

  10. Balamu,

You are obviously very, very ignorant of British history: That country, for about 150 years, up to the middle of the last century (that would be the 20th, Balamu), massacred tens of millions of people and stole so much wealth from Africa, Asia, the Americas–basically the entire world—that it’d make even your man,. M7, seem like a saint.

The monarchy is very, very financially comfortable. Very. Do you get me?

  11. Isaac,

I think now you lose it. The queen is funded publically and that is what the common man should be concerned with.Because that is tax payers money. For private funding ,i dont see why it should be anyone` concern apartfromthe people concerned. In case of Buganda ,it should be the Baganda to find a way of funding their monacrchy. About Land, ithink you miss the point .Is Uganda land the only area where there is under development? Rember we are in the third world, everything here in underdeveloped!!Our politics, our democracy, our healthcare, our infrastructure ,our everything. So, dont tell me once all land is develped, then uGanda will be developed. The Countries had to go through a process to be where they are.If only we allow democracy to take root,we would be fairing better,Where in africa do you find a fully developed land system?

  12. the Kabaka instituted his land under the Buganda Land Board(BLB) b’se himself cant reach to everyone seated on his land. Its upon those who’r on Kabaka’s land to go and clear themselves at Bulange where BLB offices are;like l personally did.Its bse people who occupy Buziga land have refused to do this.Land in Uganda has history of ownership,in Buganda its under Kabaka on behalf of his subjects-“WE”.Imagine how the few reach would have owned chunks of land, which they would buy from poor Baganda to buy;fuel, sugar….But still OUR Kabaka gets means of developing his Kingdom at the expense of those who just want to show that our King is chasing them yet they didnt get permissiom to settle on the land or even clear with BLB.Some r being used to “throw mud to our Kabaka”.Pse Kabaka is for us all.
